Build a Boarding House for Samburu Girls
The Project
Umoja Muehlbauer Academy, which was founded by Rebecca Lolosoli, is one of the best schools in the area. One hundred and fifty girls and seventy-nine boys currently attend the school. We want to build Why This Project Matters Women in Samburu are married off young, impregnated early, and are encouraged to bear more children than they can afford. They are circumcised, beaten by their husbands, and told they have no rights. Liberating women starts with education. An educated woman has the means to not only earn an income, but to communicate with visitors and with the outside world. She has the tools to seek out opportunities outside her village. An educated woman can leave an unhealthy marriage, or choose not to be married, because she has options. But the girls who attend school are still at-risk. When they live at home, they are often circumcised and married before they can finish their studies. The school needs a boarding house for its female students so they can safely finish their education. How Much We Need I am asking for $22,000 to build a boarding house for the academy, which will be wired directly to Rebecca Lolosoli. That's the price she quoted me, and the price might change once we've hired contractors. The cost is small compared to the incredible impact it will have on the girls and the Samburu community. This is an exciting opportunity for us to dramatically change girls' lives. Thank you for being a part of it! |
